Samsung Galaxy Tab unveiled

June 5th, 2011

Samsung officially debuted their new Galaxy Tab tablet yesterday and said that it’s at least as good as the iPad, if not better. Some areas where it has a leg up on the iPad are its dual cameras (front and back) that both allow picture taking and video chat. It also weighs only 0.8 pounds compared to a similliarly equipped iPad coming in at 1.6 pounds.

The Galaxy Tab also comes with built-in 3G, not as an added option. The screen is only 7″ compared to the iPad’s 9.7″. Even though the screen resolution is 1024 x 600 most all Android apps and games will work fine on it Samsung said. Here’s the rest of the specs:

Samsung Craft first LTE smartphone

June 3rd, 2011

The Samsung Craft will be the first LTE smartphone to be released. LTE (long-term evolution) is a next generation phone similiar to 4G technology. It uses an “all-IP” technology that handles everything including voice as data packets, and it’s faster than 3G.

The Craft will be first released on the MetroPCS network who is also simultaneously launching their LTE network in Las Vegas. The Craft features a 3.4″ AMOLED screen and a slide out keyboard. It runs a Samsung-developed OS that a spokesperson described as a blend between Samsung TouchWiz and BREW, and is not Android based.

iPhone coming to Verizon LTE network

June 3rd, 2011

Well it’s finally here, the New York Times announced Friday that a source from Apple told them that they will launch an iPhone on Verizon early next year on their new LTE network. The LTE (long term evolution) is faster than 3G and handles all usage including phone calls as data packets, so it’s also more efficient.

The Verizon launch will end Apple’s exclusivity contract with AT&T and many people will be happy about this, due to the millions of complaints about bad service from AT&T and lack of 3G coverage. It will also launch only a few weeks after Verizon officially launches their new LTE network, and it will be the first LTE phone ever from Apple.

LG Thrive to be AT&T's First Prepaid Smartphone

No one likes signing their life away to cell phone contracts, but fortunately, most service providers offer some kind of prepaid solution, and they’re slowly starting to diversify their phone offerings to include smartphones.

Case in point, today AT&T introduced the LG Thrive, the first smartphone to be available on its GoPhone prepaid service. The Android 2.2 device will start shipping on April 17 and will cost $179.99 and require a GoPhone smartphone data package, which comes in three flavors: $25 for 500MB; $15 for 100MB; or $5 for 10MB.

The Thrive features a 3.2-inch, 320×480 touch screen, a 600MHz processor, and a 3.2-megapixel camera. The smartphone also has Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, and 3G support and ships with 160MB of internal memory and a 2GB microSD card.

In addition to the Thrive, AT&T will offer a postpaid version of the Thrive, called the LG Phoenix, for $49.99 with a two-year contract. The Phoenix will also be available on April 17 and adds mobile hot-spot capabilities and data tethering support.

EXOvault exo2 aluminum iPhone case

February 8th, 2011

EXOvault exo2 aluminum iPhone caseEXovault makes metal iPhone cases in Brooklyn, New York. If that statement doesn’t grab your attention then you might as well stop reading right now.

With the majority of iPhone cases being made of hard plastics or grippy rubber materials, metals cases are something you don’t see every day. Metal, or other more exotic materials, might seem like an odd choice for an iPhone case, but when you consider that this is a $600 device that is spending just about every waking hour either on your person or a few feet away from you, it makes sense that some people might want to upgrade from the standard materials.

The exo2 case for the iPhone 3G and 3GS is available in either brass or aluminum. It’s a slightly modified version of EXOvault’s original exo case, which was available in brass, aluminum, or (for a short time) titanium. The exo’s metal venting at the bottom of the rear (so the case would not block the phone’s antennae) has been replaced with a rosewood insert. The combination of metal and wood means the ex02 has sort of a steampunk feel to it (especially if you opt for the brass) but clean lines and a few color options keep the case looking contemporary.

T-Mobile MyTouch 3G (White)

T-Mobile MyTouch 3G (White)

The T-Mobile MyTouch 3G has a sleek, attractive design with a gorgeous display, tactile controls, and an easy-to-use, customizable interface. Stereo Bluetooth and Outlook e-mail syncing are standard features, and call and data performance are excellent.

Sometimes, good things come to those who wait. Almost 10 months after the G1, we finally have the carrier’s second Android phone, the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G. And after giving it a shakedown, we’re happy to report that it improves on its predecessor in a number of ways. As a rebranded HTC Magic, the design is familiar, but we like the sleek profile, expansive touch screen, and user-friendly controls. We don’t miss the G1′s physical keyboard, though we recognize that some people may not agree.

Inside the phone offers everything you saw on the G1, plus a few extra goodies thanks to the Android 1.5 Cupcake update. And we can’t thank T-Mobile enough for adding Microsoft Exchange Server support. On the downside, the MyTouch has some usability quirks, the Web browser remains iffy, and some important features are missing. But when you factor in its agreeable performance and broad degree of customization, the MyTouch does much to broaden Android’s techie base. You can get it for a reasonable $199.99 with a two-year contract. Also, keep in mind that you’ll need a data plan.
