Samsung Infuse 4G review

July 18th, 2011

The Samsung Infuse 4G is a great-looking phone with exceptional media capabilities. Unfortunately, while it may shine at playing movies and music, in our tests images and text came out looking like a mess.

Samsung Infuse 4G: Polished Look

The Samsung Infuse 4G has a minimalistic design that is sure to turn a few heads. At 132 by 71 by 9mm, the phone is incredibly thin. The volume rocker and the power button are, respectively, on the left and right spines, and an 8-megapixel camera (with flash) is on the rear. The Infuse features a 4.5-inch display that takes advantage of Samsung’s new Super AMOLED Plus technology.

While high-definition movies looked great on the phone, images and text were badly pixilated. I tried viewing several Web pages and high-resolution images on the Samsung Infuse 4G, and none of them came out looking very good. Text wasn’t unreadable, but it can hurt your eyes after a while due to its jaggedness.

The front face of the Samsung Infuse 4G also features a 1.3-megapixel camera for video chatting and the usual Android soft keys (Menu, Home, Back, and Search). The Infuse also has a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top, and the micro-USB charging port at the bottom doubles as an HDMI-out (more on that later).

Well the latest Android tablet out of the Samsung, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 seems like a worthy challenger, so we have a comparison battle video for your consideration below.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 against the Apple iPad 2 comparison video comes our way courtesy of the guys over at Daily iPhone Blog and by way of Phone Arena who pitted the two tablets against each other over a four page written article that can be read on their website, but if you don’t have time for that you can of course just hit up the footage below.

No doubt the iOS faithful out there will say this is a no contest, while the Android faithful will claim the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has all it takes to take down the might of the iPad 2, but can it?

Samsung Galaxy Tab unveiled

June 5th, 2011

Samsung officially debuted their new Galaxy Tab tablet yesterday and said that it’s at least as good as the iPad, if not better. Some areas where it has a leg up on the iPad are its dual cameras (front and back) that both allow picture taking and video chat. It also weighs only 0.8 pounds compared to a similliarly equipped iPad coming in at 1.6 pounds.

The Galaxy Tab also comes with built-in 3G, not as an added option. The screen is only 7″ compared to the iPad’s 9.7″. Even though the screen resolution is 1024 x 600 most all Android apps and games will work fine on it Samsung said. Here’s the rest of the specs:

Samsung Craft first LTE smartphone

June 3rd, 2011

The Samsung Craft will be the first LTE smartphone to be released. LTE (long-term evolution) is a next generation phone similiar to 4G technology. It uses an “all-IP” technology that handles everything including voice as data packets, and it’s faster than 3G.

The Craft will be first released on the MetroPCS network who is also simultaneously launching their LTE network in Las Vegas. The Craft features a 3.4″ AMOLED screen and a slide out keyboard. It runs a Samsung-developed OS that a spokesperson described as a blend between Samsung TouchWiz and BREW, and is not Android based.

Samsung 2GHz dual-core smartphone

Samsung 2GHz dual-core smartphone

Currently the fastest processor available in a smartphone is in the Galaxy S II, with dual core 1.2GHz processors. Well Samsung has recently said that they plan to release a 2GHz dual-core model by early 2012 under the

Exynos brand, both in their own phone and through other manufacturers brands.

The phone will likely be the Galaxy S III, or whatever they call it, and will most likely include some type of laptop dock much like the Atrix.

Expect the phone in early 2012 at $199 with a new contract from Verizon.

Nexus S (Google)

Nexus S (Google)

The first phone to ship with Google Android 2.3 (also known as “Gingerbread”) as well as the follow-up to last January’s Google Nexus One, the Samsung Nexus S (available unlocked for £550 or free with a £35-per-month contract from Carphone Warehouse) is a joint effort between Samsung and Google with some impressive features. Indeed, you are likely to find it branded as the ‘Google Nexus S‘.

The Samsung or Google Nexus S’s hardware is gorgeous, and Google Android 2.3 delivers some useful enhancements; but with no support for HSPA+ or expandable memory, the Nexus S falls short of its potential.

LG Optimus 2X a dual-core LG Star

LG Optimus 2X a dual-core LG Star
LG Optimus 2X a dual-core LG Star

Here is a video of the LG Optimus 2X perhaps also known as the LG Star (SU660). Alledgely set for the Korean market, the video above displays this device working with HDMI the way phones should work with HDMI. It’s seamless, smooth and works rather well. This device looks very similar to the LG Star that we have already given some read-time too. The difference allegedly being that the LG Optimus 2X is a dual-core equivalent. In a video presented after the break, we get to see the Optimus 2X apparently wipe the floor with the Samsung Galaxy S. Of course, eventually there always had to be a new phone that drastically out-performed the Galaxy S, but to see it so soon is a rather surprise encounter.

Although I am not familiar with this particular benchmarking test, the difference in performance as shown by the video is most likely due to the dual-core nature of the Optimus 2X. Either way, it certainly casts an interesting foreshadow of what is to come from these dual-core devices. Remember, in theory they will be much less power intensive too.

Samsung Wave S8500

October 15th, 2010

Introduction:

Samsung’s first bada phone – the Samsung Wave S8500 – is finally here. A few months ago we reviewed a prototype unit, which left us with rather high expectations for the final product. Now that it’s here, we are ready to see what Samsung’s latest and greatest creation has to offer. Being a full-featured mobile platform however, bada will inevitably face some pretty strong competition in the form of BlackBerry, webOS, Android and iPhone OS. Or will it? According to Samsung, bada is the easy to use type of OS, which will combine the greatness of having rich 3rd-party apps with a user-friendly interface that would appeal to every average Joe out there. So bada is not that much of an opponent to BlackBerry and Windows Phone, than it is to the iPhone, webOS and Android. Congrats, Samsung, you just painted some really tough future for yourself.

The manufacturer’s vision is well-represented by its slogan “smartphone for everyone”. Well, a bada smartphone for everyone is no doubt what every Samsung executive envisions, but as of now this is surely more of a dream than it is a reality. The question is if, eventually, some day, the bada-based smartphones would really become a part of the general customer’s life, similarly to the iPhone now.

Samsung Wave S8500 Video Review:

Design:

In terms of design, the Samsung Wave S8500 is a great achievement of technology (and of Samsung’s design team). It is definitely a good looker, sports a pretty solid metal chassis and is really thin at just 0.43 inches (10.9mm). The in-hand feel of the smartphone is top-notch, thanks to the high-quality materials used and its significant weight.

Samsung Diva Folder S5150

October 8th, 2010
This is a global GSM phone. It can be used with AT&T and T-Mobile USA.

Introduction and Design:

The Samsung Diva folder S5150, also known as the „shinier one in the new Diva Collection 2010”, is a device that is totally capable of gripping the attention of those around you. Especially on sunny days, when it can literally make them blind as bats (rather than dazzled). Aside from its outward appearance, this is actually an utterly ordinary clamshell handset with 3.2-megapixel camera, external LED display, FM radio and microSDHC slot. In other words, we better not leave off its looks, because this is the distinguishing feature the Samsung Diva folder S5150 relies on.

Probably, there are many women with a penchant for shiny, glossy cell phones, although it turns out none of those we know happens to have a thing for that as it is. The former group is bound to fall in love with the device and its looks on the spot, but we do happen to have a word in season for them – you better just make sure you buy a pouch to protect the Samsung Diva folder S5150 from dirt and scratches. We cannot say whether or not the device gets scarred easily, but if you accidentally drop it on the ground or fail to look after it properly, it will definitely lose a lot of its glossy appeal. We are surprised the handset doesn’t come boxed with such a (much needed) accessory really.

LG C900 Windows Phone 7 Smartphone Images

September 28th, 2010
They say when it rains, it pours. And today seems to be the day for nice (and relatively clear) in-the-wild style images of Windows Phone 7 smartphones. Just a few moments ago we were treated with a few images of the Samsung i917 Cetus and now we have the LG C900.
Looking at these images we can of course see the Windows Phone splash screen, and we can also see the soft keys for back and search. But also noticed was a rather nice (and centered) shiny sliver Windows button on the bottom. And that one is a physical button as opposed to the other soft touch keys.
